Watercolor painting by Ali Cavanaugh

My dependence on the visual world began when I lost much of my hearing through spinal meningitis at 2 years of age. This loss was a blessing in disguise as I learned to depend on body language and reading lips to communicate. So, from my youngest days, I became sensitive to the people around me and the unspoken language revealed through compositions of the human body.

cyanotype is a photographic printing process where an image is created by exposing photo chemistry to sunlight and developing it in water. it’s highly unpredictable, but so satisfying to let nature impact the results in such a direct way (even in minnesota winter, when overcast skies and snowfall limit how much i can produce). a collection of one-off experimental cyanotype prints on art paper, found paper, and fabric will be on view at the show alongside my usual paintings.
